Photosynthesis & The Hill Reaction
Chloroplasts
Phospholipid bilayer
Dark Reaction – Calvin Cycle
Light Reaction - ETC
Photosynthesis
Chloroplasts of plants capture light energy from the sun and convert it to chemical energy stored in sugar and other organic molecules
6CO2 + 12H2O + light energy
C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O

The Three Parts of Photosynthesis
ETC
Photosystem II
Photosystem I
Calvin-Benson Cycle
Photosystems are light reactions because they directly require light to proceed
Calvin-Benson Cycle is a dark reaction because it doesn’t directly require light to proceed
Electron Transport Chain
Photosystem II occurs first – Does anyone know why II is first?
Step 1
Photosystem II absorbs light
An e- is excited to a higher energy level in the reaction center chlorophyll (P680) and is captured by primary e- acceptor
Oxidized chlorophyll is now a very strong oxidizing agent (e- hole must be filled because it wants an e-)
Electron Transport Chain
Step 2
An enzyme extracts e- from H2O and supplies them to P680
Replaces each e- that chlorophyll lost when it absorbed light energy
Rxn splits water molecule into 2-hydrogens and 1-oxygen molecule
2 Oxygen molecules form O2
Electron Transport Chain
Step 3
Photo-excited e- passes from primary e- acceptor of Photosystem II to
Photosystem I by way of ETC
Step 4
e- cascade down ETC, exergonic fall to lower energy level is harnessed by the thylakoid membrane to produce ATP
This ATP provides energy for the synthesis of sugar during Calvin cycle
Electron Transport Chain
Step 5
e- reaches bottom of ETC it fills e- hole in P700 (reaction center in Photosystem I)
Replaces each e- that chlorophyll lost when it absorbed light energy
e- is excited to a higher energy level in the reaction center chlorophyll (P700) is captured by primary e- acceptor
